1.Ram and Shyam starting from the same place walk at a rate of 4.45 miles/hr and 4.80 miles/hr respectively. What time will they take to be 3.5 miles apart, if they walk in the same direction ?

Ans. The relative speed of the boys = 4.80 miles/hr – 4.45 miles/hr = 0.35 miles/hr.
Distance between them is 3.5 miles.
Time= 3.5 miles / 0.35 m/hr = 10 hrs.

 

2. A thief steals a car at 5.00pm and drives it at 62.50 m/h. The theft is discovered at 5.45 pm and the owner sets off in another car at 80.43 m/h. When will he overtake the thief ?

Ans. Let the thief is overtaken x hrs after 3.30pm
Distance covered by the thief in x hr = Distance covered by the owner in (x-3/4) hr
  62.50x = 80.43 ( x - 3/4)
x = 3.36 hr
Thief is overtaken at 3.30 pm + 3 hr and .36*60 minutes = 3.30 pm + 3 hr and 21.6 minutes
=6.51 pm

 

3.A player holds 13 cards of four suits, of which seven are black and six are red. There are twice as many diamonds as spades and twice as many hearts as diamonds. How many clubs does he hold?

Ans. Clearly, the black cards are either clubs or spades while the red cards are either diamonds or hearts. Let the number of spades be x. Then, number of clubs = (7 - x).

Number of diamonds = 2* number of spades= 2x; Number of hearts = 2 * number of diamonds = 4x. Total number of cards = x + 2x + 4x + 7 - x= 6x + 7. Therefore 6x + 7 = 13

6x = 6 ↔ x = 1. Hence, number of clubs = (7 - x) = 6.

4. A batsman wears gloves of two colors - green and yellow. He has altogether 20 green gloves and 20 yellow gloves in a drawer. Supposing he has to take out the gloves in the dark, how many must he take out to be sure that he has a matching pair?

Ans. Since there are gloves of only two colors, two out of any three gloves must always be of the same color.

5. Marie cut a cake into two halves and cuts one half into smaller pieces of equal size. Each of the small pieces is fiftyfive grams in weight. If she has seven pieces of the cake in all with her, how heavy was the original cake ?

Ans.The seven pieces consist of 6 smaller equal pieces and one half cake piece.

Weight of each small piece = 55 g.

So, total weight of the cake = [2 x (55 x 6)] g = 660 g.

 

6. If '+' means 'minus', 'x' means 'divided by', '÷' means 'plus' and '-' means 'multiplied by', then which of the following will be the value of the expression 120 x 8 - 5 + 25 ÷ 3?

Putting the proper signs in the given expression we get :

  120 ÷ 8 x 5 - 25 + 3 = 15 x 5 - 25 + 3 = 75 - 25 + 3
= 75 - 22 = 53.

7. If '+' stands for 'division', '-' for 'multiplication', 'x' for 'subtraction' and '/' for 'addition', then which one of the following equations is correct?

a)5*6+7/4-3=4

b)10+4/3-2*4=30

Ans. Using the proper notations we get the statement as :
4 - 5 / 9 x 3 - 4 = 17 ⇒ 4 x 5 + 9 - 3 x 4
                               ⇒ 20 + 9 - 12
                               ⇒ 29 - 12
                               ⇒ 17.

8. If 'x' stands for 'addition', '<' for 'subtraction', '+' for 'division', '>' for 'multiplication', '-' for equal to', '/' for 'greater than' and '=' for 'less than', then state which of the following is true?

Ans. Using the proper notations in (3), we get the statement as : 5 x 2 / 2< 10 - 4 + 8 ⇒ 5 x 1 < 18 - 4 ⇒ 5 < 14, which is true.

 9. In an imaginary language, the digits 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 and 9 are substituted by a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h, i and j. And 10 is written as ba. Then ( fg + de ) x ef is equal to ?

Using the proper notations, we get the statement as:
( fg + de ) x ef ⇒ ( 56 + 34 ) x 45
                       = 4050.        

10. Sum of three even consecutive numbers is 102, and then least number is ?

Ans. 
Let the numbers be 2n, 2n + 2 and 2n + 4
2n + (2n + 2) + (2n + 4) =102
6n + 6 =102
⇒ 6n = 102 - 6
⇒ 6n =96
⇒ n =16
Hence, the numbers are 32, 34 and 36.
The least number is 32.
